A faster way to better software

Business wants valuable software delivered to market quickly. Developers want to craft quality code, and build systems that they can be proud of. Everyone agrees that high morale, retention of key contributors, knowledge sharing, risk reduction, and skill growth are desirable. Agile methods promise to deliver all of these. Is it possible? Or is 'Agile' just another fake silver bullet?

There are a variety of approaches, with names like Extreme Programming, Feature Driven Development, Dynamic Systems Development Method, and Scrum. These approaches all tend to value:

  • Frequent delivery of releasable software
  • Empowerment of individuals and teams
  • Continuous collaboration between developers, business people, and customers
  • Responsiveness to change

This workshop examines agile methods uncovering how, why, and when they work. We will avoid the preachy and focus on the practical, sharing stories and lessons from real projects. You will hear what worked and what didn't.

Participants will walk out of this class with an understanding of what agile methods are, as well as where to look to learn more. Participants will be prepared to evaluate how agile principles and practices might fit into their existing environment in order to:

  • Decrease time to market
  • Increase quality
  • Increase responsiveness to changing business needs
  • Decrease risk
  • Improve morale and retention
